Throw Back Thursday: Walking in Strength Alone!

July 7, 2017

Sometimes doing what we are purposed to do may require us to progress through seasons of solitude without the support of family, friends, peers or companions! I was the keynote speaker at the 2015 Vancouver NAACP Juneteenth Celebration where I had to address the audience regarding the topics of cultural appropriations, systemic oppression, and systemic fragility. Afterwards an African American artist came up to me and handed me a very profound sculpture that she had made! She said to me, "When I heard you speak so powerfully, I knew that you must, at times, have to walk alone and be strong all by yourself. So, I want to give this to you. This is a special piece I made called, Woman who walks in strength alone!" I was brought to tears. It remains one of my favorite art pieces to this day. Times of solitude, when you must cry and or laugh alone, are times that build character and can strengthen you. Learn to appreciate those moments!

lks in strength alone!"
